Pre Production Report Final

Introduction:
I will be producing a one minute short film which will be called The Box. The synopsis is a group of friends find a weird looking box on their travels and take it to one of the friends house. When they get to the house they go up to the attic and look at what is inside of it. (Things such as hair, bones, antique jewelry, etc are in the box.) They find some weird sweets and one by one they eat it. Once they all finish eating the sweets, they all become possessed. I have been given the role as a Production Manager so i will be in charge of funding, sourcing, scheduling, and organizing. For funding, I will have to find ways to raise money for location hire, props, make-up and costume. For scheduling, I will have to find availability for hiring equipment to shoot. Lastly, for organizing, I will make sure everything is prepared before shooting, so when it is time to go and film we will not have to rush to get the last bits of equipment.

Type of Production:
I have been required to produce a short film in the horror genre, it will require a small crew, a script, a storyboard, certain locations, DSLR cameras, and LED lights.

Finance:
For my short film, I have decided on a budget which will be £50. There are many sources to raise money, such as KickStarter, applications to National Lottery, Pitches to investors and bank loans. I have chosen to use KickStarter because it is built around creative projects. They help filmmakers, artists, designers, etc. to make their ideas come to life. Many different people from around the world are able to donate money to people so their projects can be achievable. For my budget requirements, I will use the money for travel, food, equipment (if needed), crew, talent, materials, and facility hire. Production Managers organize

Time:
There are consequences of missing deadlines, such as if the short film is not uploaded or given in at a certain time, that will result into failure of the course. We will need to spare enough time to book out equipment so we do not have to rush when it is too close to filming time. I will need to create a production schedule, book equipment using the booking sheet, have enough time to edit footage in the Mac Suite, shoot before the given deadline, complete the rough cut before the given deadline and lastly, submit the final submission before the given deadline. Failure to submit any one of these result into a NYA mark. There are many procedures involved such as breaking down the shoot into locations, set-up days and time, breaking down the editing time to hit the final deadline. Production Managers organize what is required by having schedules and deadlines, availability of equipment and availability of personnel. By having schedules and deadlines, it is important as when creating the pre-production report, we are able to move forward on what we will need to do for the Production; without the pre-production report, we will not know about the finance, timescale, crew and personnel, facilities, contributors, locations, etc. In order to book out equipment, I will have to use the booking system in college by going to the media equipment room and booking out equipment such as a camera, tripod, lights, etc. Also, with availability of personnel, I will create a call sheet to plan how to organize my crew and cast, and to also decide which actors deserve what role in the short film. The call sheets have the number of scenes there will be and what the scene names are. It also shows the location of where each scene will be filmed.

Crew and Personnel:
In total, there will be four Production roles that is needed, which are;

  • Director
  • Director of Photography (Camera Operator)
  • Production Manager
  • Production Assistant

The director will need to think strategically
The director of photography will need to be creative
The production manager will need to have good production skills
The production assistant will need to be able to provide support and help when needed.

Facilities:
We will need shooting equipment, and a editing suite. I will need shooting equipment such as a camera, tripod, lights to use to shoot my short film. Without any equipment, there will be no short film. I will need an editing suite which has Final Cut X to put my short film footage together in order to hand it in before the deadline. The procedures, costs, and activity involved is that I will have to go to a media technician to book out the editing suite and to book out the equipment. The media technician will also do an equipment safety check to make sure none of the media materials are broken. An advantage of this is that it will not cost to book out any equipment because they are college resources. I will need kit list cams, lights, gels, reflectors, lenses tripods, dolly stabilizers, etc.

Materials:

Copyright free music, also known as Royalty Free Music, allows the purchaser (us) to pay for the music license only once and to use the music for as long as we want to. I will also use stock footage if I am not able to shoot in a certain location. I would use Shutterstock to get my stock footage. All clips range in prices; If I was to get a SD quality video, it would cost me £54, for SD quality £34, and for web it would be £14.

Paying for clearances is a good thing because it allows us to use and pay for footage, actors, radio stations (that are heard in backgrounds). It ranges from £50 upwards, so it will not cost much to use in the short film.

Contributors:

In order to book extras (if I need them), I would search online for them. I would pick a few extras I like, then fill out the casting brief where I will have to provide all information and also how much I would pay them, as we are free to choose how much we would pay. For talent, I will look for them myself as I know many people that are good at acting. In a worse case scenario, if I had no actors, I would have to go to an agency to get one or two actors. RKA Talent would be a good website to scout for actors because as I was searching through the website, I found a few actors that were on TV.

Locations:
The location I have chosen for my short film will be shot in an attic, as it is suitable for my genre, which is a horror genre. It will be easy to access, because it will be shot in my house. I will need the attic for when the group of friends open the weird looking box, and become possessed. This is because it will give the audience a feeling of suspense. The procedures I will have to take in organizing this is that I will have to take a risk assessment in order to make sure everything runs smoothly in order to make my short film a success. For recces, I will have to take pictures of the attic so I am able to justify and prove that I have a location to shoot. There are no costs and agencies involved because it will be filmed in my house.

Final Proposal

Introduction
The purpose of this report is to get pitch and sell the idea to producers to get my chosen short film made. From the research I have collected, I have come to a conclusion that there is a wider audience of women that tend to enjoy horrors and thrillers. This is due to the fact that men enjoy action movies such as avengers and batman. Women like horrors and thrillers more than men because they like the Adeline rush that is given from the films they watch. The one film that influenced me to make my desired short film is The Possession (2012). This film is a supernatural horror film and has been rated 5.9/10 on IMDb which is quite a good rating, as it has been based on a true story.

Shot Film Synopsis
A group of friends find a weird looking box on their travels and take it to one of the friends house. When they get to the house they go up to the attic and look at what is inside of it. (Things such as hair, bones, antique jewelry etc are in the box). They find some sweets and one by one they eat it. Once they all finish eating the sweets, they all become possessed.

Twist: they all become possessed
Hook: the hook will be the box and what is inside of it
Short Film Idea name: The Box

My idea was influenced by The Possession as the girl becomes possessed and attached by the box and the group of friends in my shot film will be possessed by the sweets in the box.

This screenshot shows the box office for the possession. There is a total of $49million dollars. This shows that I am able to make my short film sell because this film had a wide audience and sold
Film Rating
From reviewing the BBFC guidelines, I have come to a conclusion of rating my short film as a 12 or 12A this is because my short film is a horror and will scare younger audiences. This is to make sure no one under the age of 12 is allowed to watch my short film or any film. If the short film is 12A then the younger audience would have to be accompanied by an adult. It may possibly be a 12A because the BBFC may not know whether to rate a 15 or 12. My short film will be classed as a 12 or 12A as BBFC certify/pass horror films from this category. On the BBFC website, it says that in 12A films 'moderate physical and psychological threat is permitted at 12 or 12A and the overall tone is not disturbing.' This implies that my short film cannot be certified for a 12 or 12A as my short film is based on horror and does not have parts where it is not horror related. For a 15 certificate, it says 'At 15 there can be strong threat and horror as long as there is no sustained focus on sadistic or sexual threat.' My short film will be a 15 because it will not focus on any threats as it will not be suitable for audiences.

Primary Research

The age range is from around 16-25 as most of the comments are either jokes or reviews; and the gender is mainly males, I know this because I have looked at the names and profile pictures. My target audience will be aimed at both male and females because my short film is about teenage girls and I think that young teenagers (which are of the male gender) will be interested in my short film.

Budget

For my budget, I have picked a cost which will be between £50. This is because I will have tom pay for the food for my cast and crew, props costume and also transportation. With this amount of money I will have money have left over because I am not planning on spending a lot of money on food. In order to make this short film successful, I will put my idea on Kickstarter so that I am able to raise money to make my short film successful. With the money that will be raised from Kickstarter, I will be able to pay for a camera and editing suite. But because I am a student, I will just have to hire a camera and tripod from Mr French and use the Mac Suite for free to edit my film.

Summary of Research
In conclusion, my summary is that my initial and final idea of my short film will be from the film the possession as it will make the audience jump many times form the jump scares. Another reason is that it will appeal to my target audience, which will be thriller/horror lovers at the age of `16-25.

Unique Selling Point
I am very confident that my short film will be successful as it is targeted at my desired audience, which is horror and women. There is a wide number of people that watch this genre of film as I have researched the overall rating of the film, and how much it sold. Overall, the possession made $85,446,075 worldwide. And I feel that my unique selling point is that horrors tend to have a supernatural beings attacking humans where they feel safe at most. Which is at home.

The budget breakdown for my short film will be the following
£15 for transportation
£10 for props
£15 for food
£10 for make up
I will be able to borrow a camera and equipment from the school’s media department so I will not have to pay to buy a camera of my own. I will not need to pay to hire an editing suite too due to the fact that there is a mac editing suite in the school that I can use for free

Regulation & Certification
The BBFC regulate movies that will be either shown in cinemas or put onto DVDs. the BBFC will not regulate my short film as it does not meet the regulations, which are; if it will be shown in the cinema or put on to DVD. My short film will be put into the short film festivals and YouTube, and BBFC do not regulate films that enter film festivals. If the BBFC was to regulate and certify my short film, it will be 12A.

Location
The location for my short film will be based in a attic as I have decided that my short film will only have one scene.

Distribution

My short film will be distributed onto the film festivals such as Rain dance Film Festival and London Short Film Festival. My short film will also be able to be shown on Netflix and AmazonPrime, because they regulate short films. Also, with AmazonPrime, for every subscription an account holder or filmmaker gets, they get paid every time.
